Five Ways to Improve Your Business in 2023

As 2022 comes to a close, there are three things every business—large and small—should consider doing as part of their 2023 New Year’s resolutions.

Fireworks

#1 Refresh Your Employee Handbook to Include the New 2023 Requirements.

Starting January 1, 2023, changes to California law require updates to your company policies. These updates broaden the scope of family medical leave, paid sick leave, and bereavement. Additionally, the new laws permit the use of personal cell phones at work under certain conditions. All these legal updates require corresponding updates to the applicable policies. If Medina McKelvey previously prepared a handbook for you in 2021 or 2022, the cost of refreshing your handbook to include all the 2023 updates is minimal.

#2 Update Old and Outdated Handbooks.

If your handbook hasn’t been reviewed in more than a year or you have never had an attorney review your handbook, then you should consider a more comprehensive handbook update. To learn more about our rates for updating your handbook, click here.

#3 Roll Out Enforceable Arbitration Agreements.

Does your business have arbitration agreements? Even if so, these agreements might not be enforceable unless they comply with the requirements the United States Supreme Court mandated this past summer. Click here for more information on whether arbitration agreements are right for your business and whether your existing arbitration agreements are enforceable.

#4 Protect Your Business from Future Class Actions with a Compliance Plan.

Wage and hour lawsuits are the biggest threat to businesses in California. If you haven’t been sued yet or if it has been a few years since your last lawsuit, then, unfortunately, a lawsuit may be on your horizon in 2023. This is the reality of doing business in California. If you haven’t been through our wage and hour compliance plan yet, you should consider this option to get the latest and greatest protection against this growing threat. Click here for more info on the compliance plan, which can be done for a flat fee and customized for your business.

#5 Train Your Managers and Employees.

Strong policies provide a solid compliance foundation, but educating your workforce about workplace expectations is how you bring these policies and practices to life. Through Cal Comply, we offer a variety of online and in-person training programs. Cal Comply provides a customized, virtual solution to ensure your workforce learns, is tested, and is certified on crucial wage and hour rules that may impact their health and safety.
